On this day
In 1849 the writer Edgar Allan Poe died, aged 40, in Baltimore, US. Having been missing for several days, he was found in a stupor wearing second-hand-clothes. The cause of his death remains a mystery; in 1919 KLM established the world’s first airline; in 1949 the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) was founded by the Soviet Union out of their zone of occupation; in 1959 the far side of the moon was first photographed. A processing unit on board the Soviet satellite Lunik III transmitted 17 images to Earth on October 18; in 1959 300 people had to be rescued after being trapped by a blaze on Southend Pier, the world’s longest pleasure pier, in Southend-on-Sea, Essex; in 2001 the US, with British support, began a bombing campaign, Operation Enduring Freedom, against Taliban forces in Afghanistan.
Nature notes
Summer is gone and most wildflowers have seeded and died back. But autumn has its own special flower — Spiranthes spiralis or autumn lady’s-tresses. These enigmatic orchids can take a decade to complete the progression from seed to flower but it is well worth the wait. Its pale green stem is covered in fine white hair and can rise up to 20cm, producing graceful spirals of sweet-scented, ice-white flowers. Autumn lady’s-tresses are very rare and rely on common carder bumblebees for pollination: these insects work deep into October. Once pollinated, the copious lightweight seeds wait for the gales of late autumn to fling them from the parent plant and begin the slow journey to flowering.
